Main Nave Refresh: Phase One Complete, Phase Two Ahead

Earlier this winter, we launched “Project Refresh” in the Main Nave. Today, I’m pleased to share an update on where we are—and where we’re headed next.

Earlier this winter, we launched “Project Refresh” in the Main Nave. Today, I’m pleased to share an update on where we are—and where we’re headed next.

This project is a direct response to feedback gathered during our recent strategic planning process and through ongoing conversations with patrons since reopening in our renovated space. We consistently heard that materials were difficult to locate, shelving felt unintuitive, and the layout did not encourage browsing. As a library committed to nurturing curiosity and fostering lifelong learning, that feedback was important—and actionable.

What We’ve Accomplished

  • Reconfigured shelving to create a more intuitive browsing experience
  • Shifted study tables to the rear of the Nave to provide quieter workspace
  • Began reducing excess shelving to open sightlines and improve navigation
  • Reconfigured a room originally designed as staff workspace into additional public-use space. There are now four rooms available for public reservation

Early feedback from patrons and staff has been positive, particularly around improved browsing and clearer organization.

You may notice a cluster of tables in the rear of the Nave. This temporary configuration is intentional. It allows us to avoid a structural floor condition that could otherwise create a tripping hazard while we evaluate and implement longer-term furniture solutions.

What’s Next: Phase Two

The next phase of the refresh focuses on strengthening the Nave as a functional, flexible workspace:

  • New Tables: We will replace existing tables with models that better support laptop use and device charging.
  • Individual Study Carrels: Additional carrels will support independent study and focused work.
  • More Workspace, Less Congestion: Select shelving will be removed to create more open seating areas.
  • Improved Lighting: We are evaluating and upgrading lighting throughout the Nave to improve visibility during overcast days and evenings.

A Shared Public Space

The Library is a shared civic environment. It must serve readers, students, families, remote workers, and casual visitors alike. No single configuration perfectly meets every need, but through thoughtful adjustments and continued community input, we aim to strike the right balance between browsing, study, collaboration, and quiet reflection.

We appreciate your continued feedback as we refine the space. If you need assistance locating materials or reserving a room, our staff are always happy to help.
